Phil the Kritik vs Cymtom (July 2009)

With the intensifying urge to grow as a beatmaker and the need to challenge oneself, cymptom decided to take on one of the most skilled beat makers in Lesotho at that time, Phil the Kritik (also known as Kritik beats) the result of this was a beat tape entitled Phil the Kritik vs Cymtom. Outstanding efforts that got the streets definitely talking and debating on who had the upper hand on the project, that aside this was one of the best tapes that both producers worked , it was well received locally and by cats in South Africa, America, Swaziland and Zambia among others. The opens with “Pissed Off” taken off a track that rapper Isoceles made a his first major appearance with on the Lesotho Rap scene . Coincidentially the one that follows was used by Isoceles on “Never Underestimate” a brilliant track that features Core Wrekah , one that i must say Cymtom is very proud off. While most of Phil’s beats had already been heard on other joints before (due to the fear of his beats being jacked again) he still manages to form an impressive blend with Cymtom’s tunes. “We fabulous “, used by Artform on their soon to drop compilation follows after “Move”. The two producers exchange turns with a single beat each throughout the tape. Koli ea malla is a classic street joint that sample Ntate letsema Mat’sela on the bridges as a way of paying homage and fusing hip hop with indigenous music styles. Just another filler samples Micheal Jackson’s “with a Childs heart” and uses synthesizer basslines. Towards the end the tape becomes more soulful ; in ‘Karma’ Cymtom samples Percy Sledges “when a man loves a woman” , a beat that caused a lot of dispute within local rappers (perhaps i should write up a post on beats that get jacked and cats who beef over that) ,however Zdiggy managed to do a very political track with the beat which is on a yet to drop project. The tape closes with a guest feature by BoomSlang with Music and Us.
